Website design

This is my first website - can you walk me through the process?

Sure! Everyone needs to start somewhere, and we’ll try our best to talk you though without jargon.

If there’s anything you don’t understand just ask. Remember, there’s no such a thing as ‘stupid questions’ - only questions.

How much does a website cost

The cost of a website can vary depending on various factors but one of the main ones is the time it’ll take us to complete.  If your site is very big or complex, or if you have many images that all need optimising and arranging, or you need a lot of text content writing it will be more expensive than a simpler site or where you already have all the content ‘ready to go’.

Our Stater sites - single scrolling page designs - are normally £500 including your first year’s hosting. Bespoke designs start at £1500 up to around £5k, but obviously depend on the complexity of your site.

If you don’t want a large initial outlay, why not consider one of pay as you go PAYG monthly packages. This way you always know your fixed monthly cost.

Are there any hidden costs?

No. We will provide you with a written, costed quote that describes the scope of work agreed.

Obviously if the scope of work changes considerably then additional costs may be incurred but these extra costs will be agreed in writing before this work is done.

How long will my website take to design & build?

The timescale will depend on many factors, such as how much work are we currently completing, do we need to keep reviewing and altering page designs, and other factors that may arise.

As a rule, if you have a clear idea of what you want and can provide all the relevant text and images, we can normally have your website published within 2 weeks.

Even complex sites can be completed within 4 weeks - if you have all the relevant information.

Simple 1 page designs we can have completed in 1 week from receipt of all your information.

Timescales will be discussed when we discuss your design

I've received quotes much dearer than yours: what’s the catch?

Websites come in all shapes and sizes and you'll find quotes from a few hundred £’s all the way up to tens of thousands of £’s.

Our websites are designed to be the best balance of features and price for small businesses. We're able to keep our prices down by having low overheads and simplified processes.

Websites are designed and built in-house or via our network of freelance designers. We don’t have big offices and as clients are rarely local, don’t generally offer site visits. Everything is arranged via phone, email or skype and these price savings we pass onto you.

We believe our websites exceed the standard of large agencies - at a fraction of the cost.

Does someone take ownership of my project?

Yes, you’ll have one point of contact throughout the whole process - from design to publication and beyond.

As a small family business, we don’t have a big team, so you’ll always sure get the organ grinder.

We believe strongly in building relationships with our clients, many who are small businesses like ourselves. So, you can expect replies to your phone calls or emails from the person you always deal with, often ‘out of hours’, because we know that’s when many of you have time to contact us. Building your business is not usually 9 to 5!

Do I need all my content ready & prepared first?

No, although having a clear idea is beneficial!

We can get started by using placeholder content - known as ‘Lorem Ipsum’ or fake Latin, while you finish your content.. This gives you guidance on the type of text and images that would perform best on your website.

If you don’t have images - perhaps you are a new business - we can source stock images for you. These are usually not free as you’ll need to licence them, but they are not too expensive, and we’ll agree which ones to buy on your behalf before we do.

Will my website be SEO friendly?

Yes. All our websites are created with search engines in mind, and the website design is compliant with best practice SEO techniques.

Full SEO for every page is time-consuming and ongoing - If you want in-depth Search Optimisation we offer several packages to make sure your website is found by all the search engines.

Do you accept all clients?

No, on occasion we have turned potential clients away. Why? usually when the needs of the client have far outstripped their budget.

We won’t take on projects that we know can’t be complete successfully on time, and to our client’s full satisfaction

Can you maintain my website?

Yes – and this is one of our popular services.

Not all businesses have the time to update their website and for that reason we offer a website maintenance packages that includes security measures and hosting if required, so everything is all in one place.

Will I be happy with my new website?

Yes, we’ll make sure of it. We will work closely with you to ensure that your website is designed just the way you want it.

You’ll be given the opportunity to review your site throughout the design process to be sure that you agree to everything that happens and be involved in the process.

It’ll be your site - not ours, so we want it to suit you - not us!

Do I own the website & copyright?

Yes, you own the website after full payment is received.

You own the copyright to the site except for any proprietary or Open Source software. Likewise, stock images, for any we supply you will be licensed to use them, but you won’t own the copyright

I’ve no images - can I just grab photos from the internet?

No.  You’ll end up with a big bill as there are plenty of lawyers (usually American) who specialise in trawling the internet to see who is using unlicensed images and then billing the site owner - you - for unlawful use.

If we use either free or stock images you’ll, be provided with receipts to show where they were licensed from in case there is a question in the future. However, as we only use reputable stock image companies to buy photo licences, this shouldn’t be a problem.

You indemnify us against the risk of prosecution when you sign the web build contract and state that any images you supply you took yourself, own, or have the permission of the owner.

So please make sure you know where the photo you provide has come from - otherwise it can cost you far more than the website build cost!!

Can you revise or finish my current uncompleted website?

As a rule, no, but you can always contact us to discuss your exact situation. Over the years we've found it's cheaper in most cases to start over than it is to retrofit or complete an existing website.

Are your designs pre-made templates?

Nope! We use Content Management Systems such as Joomla! or WordPress and then use a commercial frontend framework such as our current favourite Ulkit, to build your design from scratch.

For sure many components we re-use for different sites as they are the best method on the market to complete a certain task - but they’ll still be tweaked and changed to integrate with your unique site

Do your designs work on mobile devices?

Yes. We believe our solutions are some of the best you'll find. Some of our clients see most of their traffic from mobile phones.

We put a high emphasis on making sure the website experience on a phone is second-to-none.

How many design revisions do you allow for?

We try hard not to set hard and fast rules - we want you to be happy with your design! All we ask is that you give us a comprehensive list of changes each time to make the process quick and smooth.

Revisions only become an issue if it's obvious we're moving in circles. If this happens, we'll work with you on ways we can get the project back on track.

Can I move my site elsewhere?

Yes - we hope not, but should you wish to move away to another web-host in the future we can package your complete site as zip file.

This is a cPanel move file including database and files and if your new web hosts run cPanel (most do) your new designer will be able to import your site for you there. If not they will need to do it manually.

How long has Computancy been building websites?

Since 2002. Originally with standard HTML 'flat file' websites and then with WordPress and Mambo that became Joomla!

Magento 1 then 2 along with Woo Commerce and Ecwid for ecommerce.

Other platforms have been tried and left in the past including Concrete5 and Drupal although Joomla! is still the favourite, utilising the excellent the Ulkit front-end framework for development.

Do your website include (CMS) software?

Yes. We use Joomla! or WordPress, the leading two CMS systems currently in use on the Internet.

We believe it provides the right balance of customisation and usability for small businesses and makes your site more futureproof.

PAYG - Pay monthy packages

Are there large setup fees?

Nope! The only setup fee is your first month's payment, there are no other large setup fees or initial costs, just one simple monthly direct debit covers the development, build and hosting of your website.

Am I tied to a contract?

For our PAYG standard packages there is a 12-month contract period and for our PAYG e-commerce packages the contract period is 18 months

Why? Because we invest a lot of time in the initial design and development of your site and wouldn’t last long as a business if everyone only stayed a month!

We work very hard to make sure you are 100% happy with your site and service as we want you to stay longer!

What happens after my contract term, do I still pay?

Yes, if you are on a pay monthly package, you’ll pay for the life of the website as the monthly price covers not only your ongoing website development but also your maintenance, hosting and support package.

You can of course cancel at any time after your contract ends, but we hope you don’t! We trust by then you’ll be happy with your site and the support services we have provided.

What if I already have a domain?

Not a problem. If you want to transfer your domain to our registrar we’ll pay for the renewal each year for you or you can just update the DNS settings to point it to our web server.

Will I be happy with my new website?

Yes, we’ll make sure of it. We will work closely with you to ensure that your website is designed just the way you want it.

You’ll be given the opportunity to review your site throughout the design process to be sure that you agree to everything that happens and be involved in the process.

It’ll be your site - not ours, so we want it to suit you - not us!

.
Do I own the website & copyright?

Yes, you own the website after full payment is received.

You own the copyright to the site except for any proprietary or Open Source software. Likewise, stock images, for any we supply you will be licensed to use them, but you won’t own the copyright

Does my website come with an email address?

Yes - you can have up to 5 email addresses in the form of This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Can you help me source photos for my website?

Yes. We will help you source stock photos from online photo stock websites. These are paid for, again we’ll make you fully aware of any costs

Search Engine Optimisation - SEO

Why do I need an SEO service?

SEO services help your site rank better in the search engines organically. Better rankings in relevant terms will drive more traffic to your site, creating the ability for better exposure and revenue streams.

How long will it take to see results with SEO?

In most circumstances, SEO is viewed as a medium to a long-term channel. In most circumstances, SEO is viewed as a medium to a long-term channel. The time that it will take to experience an uplift in performance will often depend on your starting point.

  • Was your website built in a search-friendly manner?
  • Does it experience technical barriers and obstacles?
  • Has your domain ever been penalised for breaching Webmaster Guidelines?
  • Has any previous search engine optimisation activity ever occurred and, if so, what did it consist of?
  • How much time are you willing to invest into your monthly efforts?

All these variables can play a part.Older websites, with diverse backlink portfolios and more trust from search engines generally begin to climb in rankings faster than newer sites.

The average website, at least one or two years old, will typically show first signs of improvement in search within 2 or 3 weeks of optimisation.

It often takes 8-12 weeks to see significant improvement, as search engines need time to crawl, evaluate, and re-index new content, and react to improved website performance.

Are first place rankings for competitive keywords guaranteed?

No. We don’t own the search engines, so can guarantee nothing.

We do guarantee to get the best results possible though, and that normally means the first page.

Beware of SEO companies that claim to guarantee rankings, as natural search results are computed by algorithms that automatically index sites according to hundreds of different criteria.

Guaranteed search placement exists only through PPC paid inclusion, such as with Google AdWords pay-per-click program. The disadvantage of paid inclusion is that once you reach your daily advertising budget or terminate your campaign, your search visibility ceases.

Will my organic search results improve if I also buy PPC?

Running Paid Search campaigns and building your quality score will not have any direct effect on your SEO performance. PPC can, however, complement your SEO strategy where you have less organic visibility, or help dominate SERPs with your brand presence.

If your page ranks in the top five organic results and you have a prominent ad placement in the top three paid listings, you’ll begin to collect a greater number of impressions. This can have a positive effect on brand awareness, which means an increase in brand searches and ultimately, more direct traffic, which tends to have a higher conversion rate than any other marketing channel.

How long do SEO results last?

With an ongoing campaign, your results will continue to improve as we proactively monitor SEO performance and react both to google ranking algorithm updates, and any changes to your competitors’ sites that make them rank higher.

With one-off SEO campaigns or where you cancel the ongoing plan, obviously you will drop down the rankings, as your site will not change. How long does this take? That depends on many factors - a major google algorithm change could drop you off the front-page overnight whereas improvements to your competitors’ sites will see a more gradual decline.

In either case it is important to keep an eye on your results before your competitors take your clients away!

Will search engine optimisation change the look of my website?

Not usually. When warranted, subtle editing to your site's content will be seamlessly integrated to match your theme.

In some cases, additional web pages, improved site or page structure, or more usable and efficient navigation might be recommended. Whichever path is best for your site's success in search, its implications on website usability and your brand's image are given equal priority.

How do search engines work?

Search engines aim to build an index of all web pages via crawlers. These bots follow links and index the files they encounter.

When you enter a search query, search engines retrieve the most relevant web pages from their index and sort them based on several ranking factors.

Which factors affect the ranking of my pages?

There are many, many factors which are used to determine the relevancy of your pages, important elements include:

  • On-page factors: such as the title of the page, formatting, content, images and so on.• Domain age: as a rule of thumb; older is better.
  • Backlinks: a link to a site is seen as a vote for that site. The more links a page gets, the better. Links from domains with a high authority are more valuable.
  • Update frequency: frequently posting new articles or updating pages generally has a positive effect.
What is most important – technical SEO, content or backlinks?

White-hat SEO refers to techniques which search engines recommend as part of good design. They produce long-term results.

Black-hat SEO involves techniques that are disapproved of by search engines. These can get your site penalised or ultimately banned from the index.

There are several techniques that are considered black-hat, such as:

  • Keyword stuffing: packing long lists of keywords on your site. The content usually has little or no value.
  • Cloaking: serving different content to crawlers and visitors.
  • Hidden text: hiding keyword-rich text in the background or off-screen.
  • Doorway pages: pages created specifically for crawlers.
What is black-hat / white-hat SEO?

Yes – and this is one of our popular services.

Not all businesses have the time to update their website and for that reason we offer a website maintenance packages that includes security measures and hosting if required, so everything is all in one place.

What is keyword research?

Keyword research is a fundamental practice in search engine optimization (SEO).

It is the process of researching popular search terms people type into search engines like Google and include them strategically in your content, page titles & descriptions, so that your website appears higher on a search engine results page (SERP).

Keyword research process involves choosing a topic or seed for your content that is focused on a set of targeted keywords that you want your content to rank for.

Once you have your defined topic, you can create a plan for the keywords you already rank for and keywords you want to rank for.

Why isn't my site showing up in the search results?

There are several causes which might prevent your site from showing up in the search results.

First of all you should perform a site: search in Google (e.g.: site:computancy.co.uk) to see if it has been indexed yet.

If you see a list of pages, your site has been crawled and indexed by Google. If nothing, either it hasn’t yet been indexed or been removed for violating Google’s Guidelines - see Black Hat SEO!

Why do my search results differ from my other peoples?

Often, you’ll see different search results to other people - clients, workers etc. This is due to search personalisation based on your previous search history and is tracked via your Google profile or cookies.

To get a clean search result, open an ‘in-private’ search tab in your web browser and try again. This result won’t be influenced by cookies or previous search history

Should I buy exact-match domains?

Exact-match domains are domain names that match a certain keyword or phrase such as seogloucestershire.co.uk.

Previously this type of domain was useful, but since Google released an algorithm update, low-quality exact-match domains dropped significantly in search results.

However, for landing pages and one-off advertising campaigns they can still be very useful if they are easy to remember.

What is long-tail traffic?

Long tail traffic comes from very specific keywords. So instead of ‘website designer’ a short tail keyword, you get traffic from ‘website designer Stroud Gloucestershire - long tail.

Long tail traffic has less competition than traffic from short tail keywords and often gives better results for local search optimisation.

What is search engine friendly design?

Search engines have trouble reading certain content types (images, video’s, flash...). A search engine friendly design is a website that can easily be crawled and indexed.

Does content length matter?

Search engines prefer longer pieces of content (usually +300 words).

But that doesn’t mean shorter articles can’t perform well. It’s better to focus on the quality of your content than on content length.

Can other websites damage my site?

Possibly as competitors could build high volume of low-quality links to it, or links from malicious websites. We can remove these with the Google Disavow Tool.

What is negative SEO?

Same answer as above: low-quality links to a site that damage a site’s ranking. These links have a detrimental effect and have therefore earned the name "negative SEO".

Is SEO all about link building?

Google’s emphasis on backlinks as a ranking factor has reduced recently, but they are still very important.

It is better to focus on excellent relevant content that attracts high-quality backlinks and user engagement so that you are earning links because of your content rather than trying to build them.

Website maintenance & security packages

Why does my website need maintenance?

Just like your car, your website also needs regular maintenance and protection to protect the investment you made in buying the site.

All website content, images and operating system. Pretty much everything to keep your website working, secure and current.

How long does it take to complete the changes?

It depends on the number of change requests we have received & how busy we are on the given day. However, usually, all changes are completed within 24 business hours. Upon receiving the change requests, we will confirm the turnaround time.

How do I start with a maintenance package?

Just choose your desired website maintenance package and request a site audit

Once we’ve audited your site, we’ll be in touch to setup monthly billing by direct debit either from your bank or credit / debit card.

Once we have these details, we’ll arrange the hosting package and migration of the your site.

Do you provide maintenance without hosting?

Yes, we can offer this in most cases, and we are happy to give you a separate quote. Please get in touch to discuss your requirements.

Is your hosting reliable?

Yes. Look at our hosting pages for full details. All maintenance packages are hosted on our Pro Hosting package, the same one we use for all our own design clients. This is pro-actively monitored 24/7 so that immediate action can be taken if there is a problem.

Is my site backed-up?

Yes - your site is backed-up every 4 hours and 6 of these snapshots are kept on the sever for instant recovery.

Overnight your site is backed-up to Amazon S3 storage facility in Ireland and here we keep 7 daily backups, 2 weekly and 2 monthly. These we can recover quickly but not instantly.

Is my website data safe?

Absolutely. We take data safety very seriously. All our servers are hosted in a modern data centre in London’s Docklands.

All site passwords are stored encrypted so that no-one can access your site. We will request a separate admin account login for your website so that you have an audit record of our access to your website

What type of payments do you accept?

We accept by direct debit or credit card only. All accounts are billed in advance and will be taken on or around 1st of each month.

Do you have any contracts or cancellation fees?

No, the website maintenance service is a pay-as-you-go service, we do not have contracts or cancellation fees.

You can cancel whenever you want. If you cancel, your billing will be stopped from next billing cycle.

What is the billing period during each plan?

We charge time in 30 min blocks up to the time left available on your contact for that month. If you run out of time and require lots of changes, we’ll contact you to discuss the best course of action.

What if I run out of time allowance during the month?

It depends on how long you’ve been with us and your previous history. We like to be flexible where possible, and for long-standing clients time unused in previous 2 months will be taken into consideration.

If you’ve just joined us, then we’ll contact you to discuss the best course of action.

We do it this way as we’ve previously had clients whom we completed work for in advance, and then they cancelled their package - so we don’t do this anymore!

Do you update CMS plugins & Components?

Yes, we will keep all free plugins and components up to date and secure.

For all paid plugins, components, modules etc that require purchasing to update we will contact you first to get authorisation. You can then either pay for them yourself or we can purchase in your name at the developer cost. We will invoice you first before we buy them.

Can I have multiple sites with a single plan?

No. A single website maintenance will be included in a single plan.

Can I upgrade or downgrade my plan anytime?

Yes. Website maintenance service is a pay-as-you-go service and you can upgrade, downgrade or cancel at any time. The change will be effective from next billing cycle.

You can contact our support team to help with your plan changes.

Will unused hours in a month be carried to the next month?

No. As the packages are on a monthly recurring basis, the number of unused hours will not be carried forward to the next month.
